Jon Tariq

Jon started building his foundation for dance as a teenager. Four years of martial arts training gave him the essential understanding of body movement and balance.

He has studied a wide range of styles — ballroom, Latin, swing, Cuban salsa, merengue, modern dance, ballet, and flamenco.

His love for Argentine tango music and dance began in his early twenties. It was then that he decided to dedicate his life to this seductive art form. In 2007 he began his career as a tango instructor, choreographer, and performer, working as an in-house instructor at well-known dance studios across NYC, New Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island, and as a guest teacher at tango festivals in the US and abroad — Japan, Korea, and Europe.

Jon specialises in traditional close embrace, in the styles of Milonguero, Salon, and Stage Tango. Because he is one of the few teachers who works in traditional close embrace, and because his knowledge spans all three dances — tango, milonga, and vals — he is among the most sought-after instructors in New York.

His progressive and enjoyable approach to teaching continues to help students at every level grow faster than they expect. Jon's philosophy is that technique is the grammar that holds the language of the dance together. His mission is to pass on the depth of knowledge he received from his own teachers, to contribute to the growth of the local tango community, and to help preserve the traditions of Argentine tango.
